We were impressed by this retro-styled solo microwave from Beko, available in black, cream, blue, and red colorways. It excelled in baking jacket potatoes and heated chilled ready meals quickly and easily. We were a little disappointed by its performance when testing the soup heating function, as it failed to retain heat during the cooking process and cooled down very quickly after left for just two minutes standing. In spite of this, owing to its compact size, bold color options, and a child-lock safety feature, we would recommend this microwave to any family household.

Best microwaves for quick and easy cooking

A microwave is the go-to cooking appliance when you need food fast, hot, and ready to go. Yes, there’s something to be said for the slow-cooking approach of traditional ovens. However, a microwave is crucial for filling in the gaps when time just isn’t on your side in the kitchen.

The popularity of “mug” recipes and pre-cooked ready meals make it possible to enjoy what seems like a gourmet meal or dessert in minutes, turning even the biggest of kitchen snobs into fans of the microwave. Let’s not forget that an efficient defrost feature on a microwave can be the starting point for an exceptional meal made on time.

On the hunt for the best microwave for your kitchen? You’re likely feeling a tad overwhelmed by all of the options out there. Don’t let “appliance freeze” kick in when picking out your perfect way to heat food. Take your pick from our Best microwaves list that offers everything from style to performance.

Sharp R274SLM Solo Microwave

With a similar compact footprint to the winning model, this Sharp takes up minimal worktop space, but still leaves you enough room for a reasonably sized dinner plate (it has a 20-liter capacity). It’s a basic microwave that does a good job at most microwaving and defrosting tasks. We were pleased with the outcomes in our performance tests; defrosting mince, heating soup, and cooking jacket potatoes without any issues. It features ten auto-menu programs as well as weight defrost, time defrost, and eco settings.

If you’re looking for a basic, easy-to-use microwave that doesn’t take up much space in your kitchen, then this should do the job. Comes in white, black or silver.

Samsung Easy View MC28M6075CS

Samsung’s sleek, attractive Easy View MC28M6075CS is a brilliant combi microwave – and, at £229, the best bit is that it’s affordable, too.

The Easy View moniker refers to the fine mesh in the front door: unlike rivals, you can keep a close eye on the cooking process without having to constantly open the door and interrupt it. And thanks to Samsung’s Hot Blast technology, this microwave can do more than just heating leftovers. You can fry potato wedges, roast a whole chicken, or cook pizzas straight from the freezer, and the huge array of cooking styles mean that Samsung’s culinary repertoire is unusually broad, even for a combi microwave.

The results speak for themselves. Potato wedges come out crispy on the outside, yet pleasingly fluffy within, and even a whole roast chicken came out moist and crispy in all the right places – and in less than 45 minutes.

The Frigidaire 700-Watt Countertop Microwave

This microwave is small, but it has enough power to perform the tasks users generally ask of a microwave oven. The 9.6-inch glass turntable provides a level surface for even cooking and maximizes the usable interior space. The oven has 10 cooking levels. One nice feature lets users add the cooking time of 30-second intervals. There are four one-touch cooking options for popcorn, beverages, and other snacks, and the oven has a defrost function too.

Child safety is provided through a safety lock on the control panel. There The easy-grip handle is a built-in two-second delay between the time you press the one-touch b buttons and the startup of the microwave to allow the user to change the settings.

Russell Hobbs RHMD804CP Copper Digital Microwave

This simple solo from Russell Hobbs is instinctive to use and its relatively compressed size makes it perfect for small households or people with restricted space. On test, this one cooked jacket potatoes thoroughly and heated soup evenly. It didn’t struggle with chilled or frozen ready meals and the defrost function gave us perfectly defrosted minced beef, with no cooked parts. It’s a simple microwave with just enough functions for your daily needs and there are eight auto-cook menus to choose from. The copper effect with mirrored door finish may not be to everyone’s taste, but we find it a unique touch in a market so often dominated by black and white appliances.

Russell Hobbs RHM2017 Solo Microwave

Another entry from Russell Hobbs has a mirrored glass front window, which feels sturdy when opening. We like the simplicity of it and how well it performed when cooking fluffy and light jacket potatoes and evenly heating soup through the bowl. The cooking times are effectively calculated for you thanks to auto-cook settings, including pizza, potato, meat, and fish, among others. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite reach acceptable temperatures when used to cook chilled and frozen ready meals, so we had to pop them back in.
